MSR sports columnists Charles Hallman and Dr. Mitchell Palmer McDonald sit down with Twin Cities native and versatile media professional Tramon Van Leer.

Van Leer’s journey in sports and entertainment began as an intern, radio personality, and TV cameraman at the old 96.3 Now (B96) from 2007 to 2011, where he also worked on Tone E. Fly’s popular morning radio show. That early experience laid the groundwork for a career that now spans multiple major sports venues and broadcast roles.

From Radio Booth to Sports Arenas

Since his B96 days, Van Leer has built an impressive portfolio behind the camera. He has worked Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx games, University of Minnesota Golden Gophers matchups, and Minnesota Twins home games, capturing everything from crucial plays to unforgettable fan moments. His in-arena work focuses on shooting real-time crowd reactions and flashing them on the big board, helping create the electric atmosphere fans experience in person.

Expanding Into Game Analysis

Van Leer has also stepped in front of the mic as a game analyst for Gopher women’s basketball on B1G+, the Big Ten Network’s subscription streaming service. The role adds another dimension to his career, combining his deep sports knowledge with on-air presence.

Whether operating a camera on the sidelines or breaking down plays as an analyst, Van Leer continues to shape how Minnesota sports fans experience their favorite teams.
