Many suburban schools in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area have experienced a rapid growth in students of color over the past two decades. With this growth have come problems of adjustment as virtually all-White schools struggle to accommodate much greater racial diversity.
Hopkins High School, for example, has gone from two percent to 20-30 percent students of color in 20 years, and the adjustment appears to be far from complete. Some Black students and parents are expressing concerns to school and district officials that racial profiling, double standards, and other โobvious acts of racismโ at the school need to be addressed.
โThere is a problem going on there,โ says Veronica Jackson, who recently left Hopkins as a paraprofessional after nine years. She told the MSR last week that Black students too often are โundervaluedโ at the school.
Following are excerpts from written statements the MSR received from several Black Hopkins students (some of whose names are withheld for privacy reasons):
โAll the hall [monitors] come out and watch us as if we are being stereotyped every day,โ says a male student.
โWhy do you keep picking on this kid just to set him to explode, to get him out of class because you have something against himโฆ?โ says another male student. โItโs not fair that a teacher is trying to test you every day.โ
โI voiced my concerns to [a school counselor] about a teacher,โ says a Black Hopkins sophomore. โAfter the meeting I felt the situationโs gotten worse. She [the teacher] always belittles me in front of the class, and I feel singled out every single day. I feel like Iโm treated different than a lot of my classmates.โ
โSome teachers in this school donโt like Black kids. They [are] always thinking Black kids donโt go [to] college when they finish high school,โ adds a Black male student.
โMy sophomore year, there was an article posted in the school newspaper describing how the Black community hereโฆcrowded the stairs and how a group of White students took it upon themselves to take โtheirโ stairs back,โ says a Black female. โThey called this โOperation White Storm.โโ
Some teachers โtalk down to us,โ notes senior Shaquille Brown. โItโs unfair for Black students and [Black] students who are not athletes. We are treated like weโre stupid.โ

Brown complains that there appears to be a double standard in how Black students at the school are treated. โAll the [Black] basketball players and football stars, they are treated like the best people on the planet. If you are not a basketball player or football player, you get treated like youโre nothing. They get treated way different than us,โ he says.
When told about the Black studentsโ statements and Brownโs perception of a โdouble standard,โ Hopkins Principal Patty Johnson says, โThat concerns me a great deal. It is something we donโt want in our school.โ

โIโve never had a problem,โ says senior Ebonee Shahid, โbut I feel like some teachers do treat students of color a little bit differently, almost like they are intimidated by them.โ
Eboneeโs mother, Lariva Shahid, is a 1990 Hopkins graduate. โI moved here from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and I came from an all-African American school to this school, which had two percent people of color,โ says Shahid. โIt was very uncomfortable being a student here โ I felt like I was being judged because I was Black, and never given the same opportunities as some of these White kids. I made it through because it was my expectation and my familyโs that I graduate.โ
Shahid says it seems that things today havenโt changed much, although there are more Black students at Hopkins now than in her days there. She reports โracial profiling happening in the halls, students being falsely accused and unfairly suspended. There areโฆteachers who noticeably treat students of color different than they would a White student.โ
She and Elise Chambers, whose two sons are students, were among several Black parents who met recently with Hopkins Superintendent John Schultz on the racial problem at the high school.
โAs superintendent, I take these [concerns] very seriously. The fact that we are having a parentsโ forum is the first step,โ says Schultz, who told the MSR last week that he met with several Black parents in March.
โYou ask is Hopkins [High] School racist? Yes it is,โ acknowledges Hopkins High Equity and Inclusion Coordinator Stanley Brown. โAny institution thatโs predominately White, especially schools, is inherently racist by its existence. When you have people who have their minds set, how do you work with staff, parents and students to work on what we need to do [so] that all students feel that they are a part of Hopkins [High] School?โ
Shahidโs daughter โjust recently started expressing her concerns about racism in the high school.โ Says Ebonee, โIt wasnโt as bad last year โ itโs definitely gotten worse.โ
Not all Hopkins High Black students have personally experienced problems. Lisa Anderson, a Black parent of two daughters, says, โWe havenโt had any issues that I know of. My girls havenโt gone through or had any issues, but their friends have gone through a lot of stuff.โ
Anderson does acknowledge, however, that there has been โa lot of prejudice for yearsโ at Hopkins. โMy kids have been able to deal with it. Theyโve been in the school district since second and third grade. But I know some [Blacks] have more concerns than me.โ
Both Jackson and Chambers believe that a leadership change this school year has had an adverse effect. Johnson replaced Willie Jett, who resigned last summer to accept an administrative position with St. Paul Schools.
โI must give him [Jett] credit that when problems occurred, he would pull everyone in the office and get to the bottom of it and try to resolve it,โ recalls Jackson.
โWillie Jett was an advocate of all kids. He was very accessible,โ Chambers says, adding that she doesnโt see this in Johnson, a former assistant principal.
โI always want students to feel that I am accessible and be open to meet with them,โ responds the first-year Hopkins principal. Among her plans after students return from spring break is to hold weekly lunch periods with them.
โWeโre out there every dayโฆ[but] it sounds like Iโm not doing it enough,โ admits Johnson, who points out that of 75 teachers and 30 support staff at her high school, 10 or 11 are Black.
โWe are looking for more,โ says Stanley Brown.
โThere is not a support systemโ for Black students at Hopkins, says Chambers, who facilitates a girls group at the school. โWhen you donโt have it, what happens is [that] kids tend to act out, [and] then theyโre labeled. All they want is someone to listen to them.โ
Shaquille Brown notes that many Black students were disturbed when they learned of Jacksonโs departure. โEverybody was upset about it, because she was someone who we could go talk our problems to,โ he points out.
The superintendent feels certain that the present Hopkins staff can โchange culture, practice and visibility. I have the utmost confidence in Patty,โ affirms Schultz.
Lariva Shahid believes that if they were White parents, their concerns would have been immediately addressed. โI personally know that [a concern raised by White parents] was addressed just like that.โ
โWe are still in the process of getting the [Black] parent group together,โ notes Schultz. โWe are working very hard to ensure that these parents are heard โ that all parents have that forum to talk.โ
Johnson says that an April 26 dinner and forum is scheduled for parents of color โto share their concerns with us.โ
โItโs good for us to be challenged, and itโs good for us to know that there are eyes on us,โ admits Brown. โWe need to work harder. If one student feels that he or she is not welcomed into our schools, we have work to do. If five students feel that they are not welcomed, we have more work to do.
โOur work always will be about how do we include and how are we equitable to all students and parents, and respect all students and parentsโ voices,โ Brown says.
โI would like to see fairness all the way around,โ says Ebonee Shahid.

I served 10 years at Hopkins High as a janitor. I lost count on how many times I was called a n***er. When I worked in the Hopkins kitchen, some redneck thought that it was funny when they put an empty banana peel in my slop sink where I fill up my mop bucket; a week later, the same thing happened again. The night lead at Hopkins high got suspended for calling a Black student a n***er. Another White guy blew the whistle on him.
Janitors ignore me and do not speak to me but I got used to it. White repeatedly asked me whatโs โwrongโ with my people telling me Iโm โdifferent from the rest of the Blacks.โ Some White janitors were o.k., but some rednecks just looked at me like they hate me โ while the word n***er is all over the building. I stopped taking breaks with them, and I stopped talking to these people with mental disorders.
Sometimes I would get really sick and depressed. I also missed a lot of time at work because of these hate crimes. I found it very hard to come to work on time because I knew what was going to happen at work. I reported this to the office and became a target to get fired; no one wanted to hear what I had to say. I was ignored over and over again.
I am still at Hopkins hanging in there. When I see โprejudice at Hopkins High for years,โ it made me feel good that someone is speaking up about it. I wish others would speak up as well, instead of getting a paycheck. P.S.: Never sell your soul for money.

Hello I know this is an Old Post however this is Veronica Jackson the lady who brought it out to you have you all done any follow-up since then I have noticed that they are no African-American teachers at Hopkins High School no account however there are many minority students just a thought
Hello I have been complaining about the racism throughout the Hopkins District since 2010. When my son attended the school he his self esteem was beat down so badly that he still has not recovered from the treatment he received while attending the Hopkins Schools. I believe he was mistreated more because of my efforts to speak out about the things going on in the school and it was taken out on my son who was a perfect target for them to mistreat because he was in the special education program so he was made to look like something was wrong with him and not that of the administration and teaching staff. Sad to hear that this district is continually behaving like this and nothing is or can be done about and as usual the children suffer and some of the abuse last long past their high school years.
