Bridge will be lit in orange, resolution encourages people to wear orange
The Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Betsy Hodges have declared June 2 as National Gun Violence Awareness/Orange Walk Day, and the 35W Bridge will be lit orange. In the resolution, the City Council and mayor renew their commitment to reduce gun violence and pledge to do all they can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and encourage responsible gun ownership to help keep people safe.
The resolution states that every day, 91 Americans are killed by gun violence and countless others are injured. Americans are 25 times more likely to be murdered with guns than people in other developed countries.
Wear orange June 2 in solidarity
June 2, 2016, would have been the 19th birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade and was shot and killed just weeks later. A group of Hadiya’s friends asked their classmates to commemorate her life by wearing orange. They chose this color because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods, and orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life.
By wearing orange June 2, Americans will raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives and lost human potential of Americans stolen by gun violence.
