It’s August and the Squad of Players Adult Kickball League is nearing the end of its third season. Last Sunday’s set of All-Star games, with a rib cook-off contest and a skills competition to judge the longest kick and the fastest around the bases, took place at North Commons Park in North Minneapolis. A local youth drum corps, the TKO Drumline, provided between-games entertainment on the diamond.
Players had to dodge raindrops during the afternoon, but that didn’t dampen the scheduled event, noted league co-founder Tyrone Johnson. “Overall it’s been a good day,” he told the MSR during a break in the action.
A tenth team was added this summer, and all 10 clubs will compete for this year’s championship crown when the playoffs begin Sunday, August 13 at North Commons. “We have a couple of play-in games that start at 3 o’clock,” said Johnson. “The championship [game] is August 20.”
“The community loves it,” continued Johnson on the Sunday afternoon get-together that runs until dusk beginning in mid-June. “We haven’t had one bad day” all summer long, he reported. “They are out here every Sunday. It’s beautiful to see the community out here like this.”
