Christmas arrived early for many of us on December 20 when Ashley Dubose graced us in lavish songs that conjured fond memories of the past and realistic hope for the future.
She entered the dining area at Sammy’s Avenue Eatery’s newest location in Northeast Minneapolis, wearing a cozy red coat and heeled black boots serenading the crowd with her rendition of Tracy Chapman’s feisty “Give Me One Reason to Stay Here.”
The mesmerizing moment was only beginning, as she took us back with her own original music “Life Goes On.” Later in the show, she sang another original, “Chase It,” from her “BE YOU” album that prompted one audience member to say, “Hearing this song again helped me make up my mind about attending law school – I’m going!”
All of this happened over a delicious full three-course meal prepared and served with professionalism by Sammy and his staff. I was thrilled.
The evening continued on with the songstress prepping us for her next song by saying, “This is for the lovers in the house.” The cold air outside was no match for the warm sultry voice of Dubose as she presented us with Corrine Bailey Rae’s “Like A Star.” Keyboardist Taylor Hamilton provided the perfect accompaniment to her voice throughout the night.
With a firm zone of peace and hope established, Dubose rocked the rest of the evening with a variety of classic Christmas carols that included an exclusive cover of “Santa Baby” (originally sung by Eartha Kitt).
Dubose went on to give us more songs, while generously mingling with everyone in the crowd. She then personally invited all of us to share in her future musical endeavors.
I thank my spouse for this loving early Christmas present, truly an evening to be treasured.
