Everyone is pitching in to help alleviate the pain caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, including celebrities. It was recently announced that through her Clara Lionel Foundation, singer/beauty mogul Rihanna is donating $5 million to aid marginalized communities in the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa. The foundation’s goal is “to immediately mobilize a broad response working with on-the-ground partners” to help combat the spread of the virus.
“When we first began this year, never could we have imagined how COVID-19 would so dramatically alter our lives,” the foundation said in a statement. “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, this pandemic will affect us all. And for the world’s most vulnerable, the worst may be yet to come.”
The foundation donation is to Direct Relief, Feeding America, Partners in Health, The World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and the International Rescue Committee, among others.
Many other celebrities, especially NBA players, have also donated to help with relief efforts. Last week, the Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Townes donated 100K to aid the Mayo Clinic’s COVID-19 testing efforts.
