Thousands of community members filled the streets of South Minneapolis to express sadness and rage following the apparent police killing of George Floyd on Memorial Day.
People gathered around the Cup Foods store on 38th & Chicago Avenue where video showed former MPD officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s throat for at least 7 minutes until he went motionless. He later died. Chauvin and three other officers have since been fired.
The all-too-familiar chants of “Prosecute the police!” and “If we don’t get no justice, they don’t get no peace!” rang through the streets as demonstrators marched to the 3rd Precinct Police Station.
As night fell and the crowds thinned, things took a more intense tone as protesters clashed with police officers.
