Karl-Anthony Towns tests positive for COVID-19

Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns took to Twitter to announce that he has tested positive for COVID-19. He announced the news before the Timberwolves were set to face off with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday. The game has been postponed in compliance with the NBA’s COVID safety protocols.

Towns is one of many NBA stars in recent days to have contracted the virus. A total of 13 games have been postponed so far this season.

“Prior to tonight’s game,” Towns wrote, “I received yet another awful call that I tested positive for COVID. I will immediately isolate and follow every protocol.

“I pray every day that this nightmare of a virus will subside and I beg everyone to continue to make it seriously by taking all the necessary precautions. We cannot stop the spread of this virus alone, it must be a group effort by all of us,” he wrote.

Towns has already felt the devasting effects of COVID-19, having lost his mother and six other family members to the virus. His mother Jacqueline Cruz-Towns succumbed to COVID-19 last April after nearly a month-long battle with the disease. His father also had the virus but has since recovered.

Towns was one of the first NBA stars to step up in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, announcing a 100K donation to the Mayo Clinic to aid coronavirus testing back in March of 2020.
