Reverend Dr. Mildred Louise (Wright) Cox, age 87, passed peacefully on May 14, 2022. Mildred was born May 3, 1935, to Clyde and Katie Ruth Wright and raised in Knoxville, TN.
She attended Meharry Medical College and pursued a career in nursing and nursing education before being called to the priesthood and eventually earning her doctorate. She was ordained as an Episcopal priest in December 1999.
She married Walter Cox, Sr. in 1961 and they had three children. She also enjoyed playing the violin, reading, and writing, and she self-published the book “The Jewels of Rondo” in March 1993.
She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She loved entertaining friends and family and sharing a good meal. She also loved cats.
Rev. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, older sister Della Sue, and husband Walter Sr. She is survived by her children Laurie, Walter Jr. (Rhonda), and Pamela; grandchildren Eric and Chavelle; great-granddaughter Nevaeh; and nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
She will be missed by all who knew her and the love she gave to them.
Visitation will be at Estes Funeral Chapel, 2201 Plymouth Ave. in Minneapolis on June 2 from 4-7 pm.
Services will be held June 3 at 11 am at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, located at 519 Oak Grove St. in Minneapolis. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on June 6 at 1 pm.
