Alan Wells, 62, rescued Gilbert the vulture a year ago after the bird was headed for a life at Prague Zoo โ€“ which then closed during lockdown.

Gilbert โ€“ who has a five-foot wingspan โ€“ now lives at Alanโ€™s home in Somerset in southern England but regularly flies off to visit locals in their gardens.

googletag.cmd.push(function () { var mapping1 = googletag.sizeMapping() .addSize([1024, 0], [[728, 90], [300, 250], [350, 900]]) .addSize([378, 0], [300, 250]) .addSize([0, 0], [[300, 250], [320, 50]]) .build(); googletag.defineSlot(โ€˜/22452467327/zenger/inarticle2โ€™, [[728,90], [300,250], [300, 600], [320,50]], โ€˜div-gpt-ad-1767121-4โ€™).defineSizeMapping(mapping1) .setTargeting(โ€˜sectโ€™, โ€˜articleโ€™) .setTargeting(โ€˜page_urlโ€™, top.location.host) .setTargeting(โ€˜urlโ€™, top.location.pathname) .setTargeting(โ€œpostโ€, 172414) .setTargeting(โ€˜authorโ€™, โ€˜ โ€˜) .setTargeting(โ€˜photographerโ€™, โ€) .addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display(โ€˜div-gpt-ad-1767121-4โ€™); });

The large turkey vulture can fly up to ten miles and some neighbors have kicked up a stink.

One described Gilbert as looking like heโ€™s from โ€˜the pits of hell,โ€™ saying that having it land in the garden was the โ€˜scariest experience of my life.โ€™

But Alan, who runs Pitcombe Rock Falconry, says Gilbert is harmless, tame โ€“ and just โ€˜saying helloโ€™.

He said: โ€When I trained Gilbert a year ago my intention was to allow him to fly as free as I could.

googletag.cmd.push(function () { var mapping1 = googletag.sizeMapping() .addSize([1024, 0], [[728, 90], [300, 250]]) .addSize([378, 0], [300, 250]) .addSize([0, 0], [[300, 250], [320, 50]]) .build(); googletag.defineSlot(โ€˜/22452467327/zenger/inarticle3โ€™, [[728,90], [300,250], [320,50]], โ€˜div-gpt-ad-1767121-41โ€™).defineSizeMapping(mapping1) .setTargeting(โ€˜sectโ€™, โ€˜articleโ€™) .setTargeting(โ€˜page_urlโ€™, top.location.host) .setTargeting(โ€˜urlโ€™, top.location.pathname) .setTargeting(โ€œpostโ€, 172414) .setTargeting(โ€˜authorโ€™, โ€˜ โ€˜) .setTargeting(โ€˜photographerโ€™, โ€) .addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display(โ€˜div-gpt-ad-1767121-41โ€™); });

โ€The thought of him landing in peopleโ€™s gardens never entered my head.

โ€œPeople have been in the back garden, in their patio, having afternoon tea, and heโ€™s come right up, looking around the table, investigating the crumbs on the floor.

googletag.cmd.push(function () { googletag.defineSlot(โ€˜/22452467327/zenger/inarticle_adtangomedia_2โ€™, [[300, 250], [760, 357], [1, 1]], โ€˜div-gpt-ad-1767121-61โ€™).setTargeting(โ€˜sectโ€™, โ€˜articleโ€™) .setTargeting(โ€˜page_urlโ€™, top.location.host) .setTargeting(โ€˜urlโ€™, top.location.pathname) .setTargeting(โ€œpostโ€, 172414) .setTargeting(โ€˜authorโ€™, โ€˜ โ€˜) .setTargeting(โ€˜photographerโ€™, โ€) .addService(googletag.pubads());googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs();googletag.enableServices(); googletag.display(โ€˜div-gpt-ad-1767121-61โ€™); });

โ€œItโ€™s not every day you get a vulture come and land in your garden.

โ€My message to those who complain about Gilbert is that heโ€™s inquisitive.

โ€œI canโ€™t really predict where heโ€™s gonna go. Heโ€™ll go quite a distance and come home when heโ€™s finished.

โ€œHeโ€™s coming into your gardens because thereโ€™s something of interest in there to draw him in.

โ€œThat interest isnโ€™t in the small children playing or the small pets, it will be a smell โ€“ usually from a dustbin or food waste bin.

โ€œThatโ€™s what has drawn him in, but he wonโ€™t want a meal.

โ€Heโ€™s fed before he goes out flying, but itโ€™s nice for him to be able to do what he does in the wild โ€“ investigate smells.

โ€œAs soon as heโ€™s had an investigation and discovered that thereโ€™s nothing there for him, heโ€™ll fly away.

โ€œI would say to people that itโ€™s a privilege to have Gilbert in your garden โ€“ enjoy him, see a little bit of nature you wouldnโ€™t normally see.

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t get this close to a turkey vulture in a zoo or at a wildlife park.

โ€œDonโ€™t feed him, donโ€™t attempt to pick him up, let him do what he wants.

โ€If heโ€™s being a nuisance, call me and I will collect him โ€“ he has a GPS tag, so I know where he is all the time.

โ€œA turkey vulture only eats dead stuff so if your pet, guinea pig, or rabbits are running around your garden, they are perfectly safe.โ€

Not all the neighbors have been welcoming to the new resident.

One said: โ€œItโ€™s probably one of the most terrifying experiences of my life.

โ€œWalk out the front door, turn around and thereโ€™s this creature, almost like itโ€™s come from the pits of hell and I find out itโ€™s a bird named called Gilbert, so itโ€™s quite an exciting experience really.โ€

Another said: โ€œHeโ€™s not pretty, he sits on my bins and frankly, he flutters around and itโ€™s pretty scary.โ€

Alan, of Bruton, Somerset, runs a falconry at home where he keeps a number of birds of prey, owls and even a family of ferrets.

Alan said it was a โ€œgolden opportunityโ€ to add a vulture to his falconry, a not-for-profit organization that makes regular trips to schools and offers education visits.

Alan socialized Gilbert with other birds and allowed him to roam free in the falconry โ€“ spending time with his small dog Buster.

He said: โ€œWe keep ferrets here, and heโ€™s not interested in them because theyโ€™re moving and theyโ€™re alive.

โ€œMy very small dog Buster, whoโ€™s Jack Russell-size, is smaller than a lamb โ€“ again, heโ€™s not interested in him.

โ€œHeโ€™ll go alongside him and preen him with his break and Buster will get up and look at him with distaste and move on.

โ€œHis diet consists of day-old chicks, which are male birds supplied by the egg industry, he also enjoys rats, quail, chickens, pheasant, and sometimes lamb.

โ€œHe only eats dead stuff. There are a few vultures within the 22 species in the world that do actually kill their food, but heโ€™s not one of them and heโ€™s not interested in anything thatโ€™s that alive.โ€

Alan says Gilbert hasnโ€™t got sharp talons to do any damage, and added that pets and children arenโ€™t at risk.

Gilbert had been bound for Prague Zoo but when the attraction closed to visitors during the pandemic he was taken in by Mr. Wells.
