Unbeaten WBA “regular” super middleweight champion David Morrell, Jr. defends his title on Saturday night, Dec. 16 at The Armory in downtown Minneapolis.
The Cuban-born Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs) goes up against Sena Agbeko of Ghana (28-2, 22 KOs) as the co-main event on the last boxing telecast on Showtime. The champ, who calls Minneapolis home after he defected from his native country, also calls the historic city entertainment venue his home ring as that is where Morrell fought most of his pro fights.
“This is my hometown,” Morrell told the MSR before Thursday’s press conference at the W Foshay Hotel.
Since 2018, the Armory has hosted some memorable fights, including Morrell’s pro debut.
Morrell’s last fight was a first-round knockout of Yamaguchi Falcao in April in Las Vegas. He is looking forward to Saturday night in so many ways—his parents are in town from Cuba to watch their son fight in person as a professional since he left his homeland a few years ago.
Agbeko, nicknamed “The African Assassin” is on a five-fight winning streak. “I’ve always had the mindset to be the top man,” he said to reporters, including the MSR. “I want to be that guy now.”
Super featherweight contenders Chris Colbert (17-1, 6 KOs) and Jose Valenzuela (12-2, 8 KOs) – the former won on the scorecards in March—will again square off in the second co-main event on Saturday, a 12-round WBA Lightweight Title Eliminator match.
The two fighters went at each other with barbs at Thursday’s conference:
“I will knock your [butt] out,” Valenzuela told Colbert, who was sitting across from him.
“That’s press conference talk,” replied Colbert.
WBC Flyweight Champion Julio Cesar Martinez defends his crown against unbeaten contender Angelino Cordova. A 10-round welterweight rematch featuring two former world champions, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Andre Berto is expected to open the final boxing telecast from Showtime Sports after 37 years. The two last fought each other 11 years ago.
“I’m ready to go,” declared Guerrero.
Doors open on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CT and the fight card ɓegins at 5 p.m.
“Just tune in on Saturday. It will be a movie you don’t want to miss this,” concluded Colbert.
