South Carolina State (7-2) made this weekโ€™s AFCA FCS Coaches Poll for the first time this season.  The Bulldogs checks in at No. 23 and joined No. 20 Jackson State (8-2) as the only HBCUs in the rankings.

    S.C. State knocked off Howard 38-14 and Jackson State defeated Mississippi Valley State 51-14 last weekend.

    The Bulldogs plays at Morgan State Nov. 16, and the Tigers travels to Alabama State Nov. 16.

MEAC weekly honors

    Senior wide receiver Einaj Carter of South Carolina State was named Offensive Player of the Week, the MEAC announced on Monday.  Teammates Kwantre Harry, a junior defensive back, was named Defensive Player of the Week; Tray Franklin (sophomore) and Dyson Roberts (senior) earned Offensive Lineman and Specialist of the Week honors respectively.

   Other top performers: 

   Sahr Gbundema (Morgan State kicker) was named Rookie of the Week

   Jason Collins Jr. (Morgan State) rushed for 152 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown against Delaware State

   Keith Jenkins (Morgan State) returned two kicks for 75 yards and caught five passes for 71 yards and a TD

   Terrence Hollon (Howard) made eight tackles and recovered a fumble against S.C. State

    The conference on Monday also announced its weekly MBB honors:

    Norfolk State guard Brian Moore Jr., Howard guard Blake Harper and Coppin State guard Derrius Ward all earned this weekโ€™s MEAC Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week respectively.

   Other performers recognized โ€“ Martaz Robinson (DSU), Ketron Shaw (UMES), Wynston Tabbs (MSU), Melo Barnes (NSU) and Josh Smith (NCCU).

Finally โ€ฆ

    Norfolk State Spartans womenโ€™s basketball team on Sunday defeated Missouri 57-54, the first time the team ever defeated an SEC program and the first time since 1979-80 that NSU defeated a Power 5 conference team.

    Kierra Wheeler, a senior from Minneapolis, had 14 points including a key layup with 43 seconds left that gave the visitors a final lead and secured the three-point victory.

     Diamond Johnson led the Spartans with 17 points, four assists and two steals.  Niya Fields added 14 points.
