The highly anticipated Hennepin County Expungement Clinic, scheduled for Tuesday, November 19, at the Brookdale Library in Brooklyn Center, has seen overwhelming interest, with all pre-registration slots now filled. However, organizers assure that walk-ins are welcome and encouraged to attend on a first-come, first-served basis.

This free event, hosted by the Hennepin County Attorneyโ€™s Office in collaboration with the cities of Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park, is designed to assist individuals in sealing eligible felony records, providing a fresh start for those who have served their sentences.

A Path Toward Rehabilitation

Expungement offers individuals a vital chance to rebuild their lives by removing barriers to employment, housing, and other essential opportunities. Clare Diegel, director of the Professional Standards Division with the Hennepin County Attorneyโ€™s Office, emphasized the focus on specific cases:

โ€œItโ€™s going to be some of the whatโ€™s considered lower-level felonies. A lot of drug possession, up to third-degree felonies would be eligible.โ€

However, the event does not cover cases involving child abuse, domestic assault, homicide, or sexual assault.

For many, the clinic represents not just a legal remedy but a meaningful step toward justice and community reintegration. Tekoa Cochran, executive director of The Village BP, highlighted the broader significance of expungement:

โ€œUltimately, expungement is about fairness and justice and forgiveness. It recognizes that people can change, grow, and contribute in meaningful ways. It is not just a legal remedy, itโ€™s an investment in individuals, families, and the future of our community.โ€

Event Logistics

The clinic, open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., will be held at:
Brookdale Library
6125 Shingle Creek Pkwy
Brooklyn Center, MN 55430

Walk-in attendees should arrive prepared to wait, as the high demand may result in longer processing times. Light refreshments will be available.

To streamline the process, participants will meet with attorneys and begin the necessary steps for sealing eligible records. This collaboration between the Hennepin County Attorneyโ€™s Office and its partners underscores a commitment to rehabilitation and reducing recidivism.

Community Fair Adds Value

In addition to the expungement services, the event will host a Community Fair featuring various local organizations. Attendees can connect with resources and services that further support their reintegration into the community.

A Track Record of Success

Since the program’s inception in 2020, the Hennepin County Attorneyโ€™s Office has helped over 2,700 individuals successfully expunge their records. With thousands more potentially eligible, the clinic represents an important opportunity to address the lingering impact of criminal records.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty stressed the importance of taking advantage of this service:

โ€œWe encourage anyone who thinks they fall into this category to come to the clinic and begin the process.โ€

Spreading the Word

Organizers are urging the community to share information about the event with those who might benefit. With walk-ins still an option, this clinic provides a critical chance for individuals to reclaim their futures and move forward without the burden of past mistakes.
