Tyka Nelson, the younger sister of music legend Prince, passed away on November 4 at the age of 64. New details confirm that she died of cardiac arrest, with secondary complications stemming from congestive heart failure and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy.

Tyka, who shared her brother’s creative spirit, had suffered from non-ischemic cardiomyopathy for at least four months prior to her death, according to her death certificate. The condition, described as a weakening of the heart muscle not caused by heart attacks or arterial blockages, added to the health challenges she faced.

Her passing also highlighted the toll of substance use on her already fragile heart, which ultimately led to the cardiac arrest that claimed her life.

Much like Prince, Tyka was deeply rooted in music, carving out her own legacy. She released four studio albums over the course of her career, showcasing her unique voice and songwriting talents. Her discography included Royal Blue (1988), Yellow Moon, Red Sky (1992), A Brand New Me (2008), and Hustler (2011).

Though she planned to bid farewell to performing with a final concert in Minneapolis earlier this year, health complications prevented her from taking the stage. In an earlier interview, Tyka reflected on her life as an artist: “I’m not really a singer—I’m a writer who happens to sing. That’s where my heart has always been.”

A Family Anchor

Tyka’s life extended far beyond her music. She shared six children with her husband, Maurice Phillips: daughters Danielle, Crystal, and Chelsea Phillips, and sons Rachard, Sir Montece Laeil, and President Phillips. Her legacy of love and resilience will undoubtedly live on through them.

“She had her own mind,” her son, President, told the Minnesota Star Tribune. “She’s in a better place now.”

Tyka’s half-sister, Sharon Nelson, also reflected on her strength and individuality, saying, “She was courageous and always true to herself.”

The Nelson Legacy

As the sister of one of the world’s most iconic performers, Tyka walked a unique path—one shaped by the pressures of fame but also by her determination to forge her own identity. Her life was marked by creative achievements, family devotion, and a steadfast spirit that resonated with those who knew her.

While her health challenges ultimately cut her life short, Tyka Nelson’s story is one of resilience and artistry—a fitting addition to the remarkable legacy of the Nelson family.
