In a state that prides itself on progressive values, there exists a stark and persistent crisis that is too often overlooked โ youth homelessness. Every night, more than 6,000 young people in Minnesota face the harsh reality of sleeping without a home. They are our neighbors, our future, and far too often, they are Black and brown youth who bear the brunt of a system that is quick to forget them.
This is where Backpack Project MN comes in. Founded on the belief that every young person deserves dignity and care, Backpack Project MN has spent the past decade ensuring that the most vulnerable members of our community have access to the basic necessities they need to survive and thrive.
Over the years, their work has provided over 7,000 backpacks filled with personal care items to young people across the Twin Cities. They partner with organizations like YouthLink, The Link, StreetWorks, Ain Dah Yung Center, and the Division of Indian Work, leveraging their networks and volunteers to make sure that these backpacks reach those who need them most.
The Power of a Backpack
A backpack may seem like a small thing, but for a young person without a home, it can be a lifeline. These backpacks contain items that are easy to overlook but essential for survival: socks to keep warm, menstrual kits for hygiene and dignity, and other personal care products that remind youth that they are valued. Each backpack becomes an extension of hope, a testament to the fact that someone sees them, someone cares, and someone believes they deserve better.

As winter approaches, the weight of homelessness becomes heavier, with frigid temperatures adding a layer of danger to an already difficult existence. It is more crucial than ever that we rally behind initiatives that protect and support youth. Backpack Project MN is seeking to raise $25,000 for their operating costs in 2025 to continue their critical work. Without this funding, the project risks falling short of meeting the growing need.

Why This Matters
Homelessness is more than just a lack of shelter. It is an experience that strips away a personโs dignity and stability. For Black and brown youth, systemic inequities often mean that their struggles are compounded. It is our responsibility to make sure that these young people not only survive but have the tools to fight for a better life. Backpack Project MN offers us all the chance to make a tangible impact, reinforcing the idea that our community is only as strong as its most vulnerable members.
When we donate a backpack, weโre not just giving a gift. We are giving a young person the chance to hold onto their dignity, face the challenges of homelessness with strength, and move forward with hope.
Stand with Backpack Project MN and Make a Difference
Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us closer to ensuring that no young person in Minnesota has to face homelessness alone. The time to act is now โ because every young person deserves the chance to grow up safe, warm, and cared for.
