In a groundbreaking effort to support the creative economy, Springboard for the Arts is expanding its guaranteed income program, providing Minnesota artists with financial stability and creative freedom. Established in 2021, the initiative, based in St. Paul, has already impacted dozens of lives and is set to grow even further in the coming year.
The program, which currently supports 75 artists across multiple counties, offers no-strings-attached payments of $500 per month over 18 months. Starting early next year, it will expand to include 100 artists and increase payments to $30,000 over five years.
Participants, like Fergus Falls fiber artist Torri Hanna, have shared life-changing experiences. “The monthly payments helped me regain control of my finances, raise my credit score, and even purchase a home,” Hanna says. “This program gave me breathing room to focus on my art and my family.”
Springboard’s commitment goes beyond financial support. Artists receive guidance on personal finance, housing, and debt management—services aimed at fostering long-term stability. The organization places particular emphasis on supporting artists from marginalized communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and individuals with disabilities.
This pioneering effort is funded entirely by private foundations, including the Bush, Ford, Kresge, and McKnight Foundations. It stands as one of the few guaranteed income programs nationwide specifically tailored for artists. By creating an “income floor,” Springboard for the Arts is demonstrating that investing in artists is an investment in community vitality and cultural enrichment.
“We trust people to make the best decisions for themselves,” says Ricardo Beaird, Springboard’s director of community development. “This program enables artists to not only thrive but to create a ripple effect of impact within their communities.”
As the guaranteed income movement gains traction across the country, Springboard for the Arts continues to lead the charge, providing a powerful model for equity and creativity.
