The sudden passing of Dominique Brown, a 34-year-old social media influencer and co-founder of BlackGirlDisney, has left a void in the hearts of many. Dominique was known for her infectious smile, her passion for all things Disney, and her commitment to creating a welcoming space for Black women and other women of color in the Disney fandom. Her death on December 5th, following a severe allergic reaction at a BoxLunch-hosted event in Los Angeles, has sparked conversations about accountability, representation, and the importance of safety in inclusive spaces.

Dominique, who created BlackGirlDisney in 2018 alongside fellow influencer Mia Von, was a pioneer in celebrating Disney culture through the lens of Black joy and empowerment. In a space often criticized for its lack of diversity, Dominiqueโ€™s work broke barriers, providing a platform for Black women to share their love of Disney and form a vibrant, supportive community.

The Tragic Incident

According to reports from US Weekly, Dominique suffered a fatal allergic reaction at the event, despite having reportedly informed the host company, BoxLunch, of her food allergies beforehand. While BoxLunch claims to have communicated attendeesโ€™ allergen lists to the catering venue, many have criticized the company for its handling of the tragedy.

In a statement released on December 7, BoxLunch expressed their devastation over Dominique’s passing:

โ€œWe are devastated by the passing of Dominique Brown, a beloved member of the BoxLunch Collective, who suffered a medical emergency at an event hosted by BoxLunch Thursday in Los Angeles. Our hearts go out to her family and friends, and we will do everything we can to support them and the members of the BoxLunch Collective and our team during this painful time.โ€

However, some influencers at the event described BoxLunch’s response as “insensitive,” noting that the company continued posting holiday advertisements on social media without acknowledging the incident. Others pointed to an email sent to attendees, which they felt lacked empathy. BoxLunch has since announced an independent investigation into the incident.

Honoring Dominiqueโ€™s Legacy

Dominiqueโ€™s impact extended far beyond her social media platforms, where she was known as HellooDomo. She was a light in the Disney influencer community, often celebrated for her kindness, humor, and dedication to inclusivity. In the days following her passing, tributes poured in from friends, followers, and fellow influencers.

Her brother, @pramos313, shared a heartfelt message under Dominiqueโ€™s last Instagram post:

“Disney did bring her joy, but it was unparalleled that she found a community who loved her and Disney as much as she did. I will miss my sister and best friend and that infectious smile she always had. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart.โ€

Influencer Tatiana Kelley described Dominique as โ€œthe kindest, most genuine person in this community,โ€ while Katy Lane reflected on Dominiqueโ€™s positivity, writing, โ€œYour positivity and passion for life will always inspire me. You were and will continue to be the good in the world, Dom.โ€

A Call for Accountability and Change

Dominiqueโ€™s death has highlighted the need for greater accountability in event planning, particularly when it comes to food safety and inclusivity. As a prominent figure in the Black Disney community, Dominiqueโ€™s story is a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, can feel safe and valued.

Her legacy will live on through the BlackGirlDisney community and the countless lives she touched. Dominique Brown was more than a Disney influencer; she was a trailblazer, a role model, and a beloved sister and friend.
