After four transformative years of advocacy and change, Be Their Voices will officially close its doors on December 15, 2024. Founded just days after the tragic passing of Hardel Sherrell, this Minnesota nonprofit has championed the rights of the incarcerated, amplified marginalized voices, and advocated for systemic reforms within correctional institutions.

A Legacy of Justice
The journey began with Del Shea Perry’s mission to ensure that no family endures the anguish her family faced. Hardelโ€™s death in Beltrami County Jail due to neglect sparked an unrelenting fight for justice. This fight culminated in the passage of the Hardel Sherrell Act in 2021, a groundbreaking law setting minimum standards for medical care, mental health, and suicide prevention in Minnesota jails. Hardel’s legacy lives on in this monumental legislation.

In the same year the Act passed, eight lives were lost in Minnesota jails, underscoring the ongoing need for reform. Be Their Voices worked tirelessly to shine a light on these injustices, giving a platform to families who lost loved ones to systemic neglect.

Reflecting on the Impact
Through initiatives like the documentary MAMA! and partnerships with community organizations, Be Their Voices used storytelling to honor the resilience of those impacted by police violence and incarceration. These stories stirred conversations, built solidarity, and demanded accountability.

A Personal Goodbye
As the nonprofit closes, founder Del Shea Perry looks forward to focusing on personal healing and spending time with her grandchildren. She is also preparing to promote her book, Stay the Course and WATCH!, which chronicles her journey of advocacy and faith.

Del Sheaโ€™s commitment to uplifting the incarcerated and their families remains steadfast. She encourages supporters to continue the fight by advocating to the Minnesota Attorney General and standing with those whose voices are often unheard.

Moving Forward
The closing of Be Their Voices marks the end of an era but not the end of its mission. The fight for justice, dignity, and systemic reform continues in the hearts of those inspired by Del Shea Perry’s work.
