The Phyllis Wheatley Community Center (PWCC), a cornerstone of North Minneapolis and a beacon of hope for nearly a century, has announced the appointment of David Hunter II as its new Executive Director. This milestone marks a return to roots for Hunter, whose personal and family history is intricately connected to this historic institution.
In a heartfelt announcement shared on LinkedIn, Hunter expressed his excitement about taking on this new role, reflecting on the profound significance of the community center in his life. “This building, located next to Bethune Elementary School, holds a special place in my heart as itโs where I spent my childhood and attended school from kindergarten through sixth grade,” he wrote.
Hunterโs connection to PWCC runs deep, extending beyond his formative years. His uncles devoted years of service to the center, making meaningful impacts in the community. His mother, who dedicated 32 years to teaching in the Minneapolis School District, also contributed to a legacy of empowerment and education that continues to inspire him.
A Legacy of Service
Established in 1924 as a settlement house, the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center was created to address the systemic challenges faced by Black families seeking education and housing during a time of rampant racial discrimination. Over the years, it has hosted historical luminaries such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Marian Anderson, Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, and even Prince.
Today, PWCC stands as one of Minnesotaโs longest-running nonprofits, providing vital resources, fostering a sense of belonging, and empowering underserved communities. Its missionโto create pathways for individuals to discover their strengths, purpose, and futuresโresonates deeply with Hunter as he embarks on this leadership journey.
A Vision for the Future
In his LinkedIn post, Hunter shared his commitment to strengthening PWCCโs programs, inspiring youth, supporting the centerโs dedicated staff, and amplifying the organizationโs impact on the community. “I am honored to carry on this meaningful legacy,” he wrote, pledging to ignite hope, unity, and resilience within the community.
Hunter also reflected on the journey that brought him to this moment, emphasizing the importance of the village of support, networks, and leaders who believed in him. “Returning FULL CIRCLE to the very place that shaped my upbringing is truly beyond anything I couldโve dreamed,” he noted.
Looking Ahead
As Hunter and his family prepare to relocate to the Twin Cities, they are eager to contribute to the vibrant community that has been such a significant part of their lives. “Hereโs to the next 100 years!” Hunter exclaimed, underscoring his vision for the future of PWCC.
With Hunter at the helm, the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center is poised to build upon its remarkable legacy, continuing to serve as a vital resource and a source of inspiration for generations to come.
