A tragic accident on Monday, December 16, 2024, claimed the lives of two beloved community members, Esther and Rose, both residents of North Minneapolis.
This Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 1 p.m., the North Minneapolis community will gather at the crash site—Emerson Avenue North and 26th Avenue North—to honor their lives and grieve together.
The vigil, organized by STAR MPLS, is a collective response to the pain and loss felt throughout the neighborhood.
Honoring Esther and Rose
“These women were more than just neighbors; they were friends, co-workers, and family to us,” said one community member. “They were part of our community, and we will honor their memory together. Esther and Rose belonged to us, just as we belong to them.”
Attendees are invited to share memories, offer prayers, and find solace in a space of unity and support.

STAR MPLS, the local chapter of a national organization inspired by the work of Trans/Queer liberation icons Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, is leading the vigil’s organization. As a Trans/Non-Binary/Queer/Two-Spirit working-class and BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) collective, STAR MPLS is committed to fostering healing and justice within marginalized communities.
The group’s mission is rooted in honoring the past while building a liberated future. “We water the roots of the past with the spirit of the present,” STAR MPLS states.

This vigil is not only an opportunity to mourn but also a time to come together as a community in healing. Families and friends of Esther and Rose, as well as others impacted by the tragedy, are encouraged to participate.
