As winter sets in and temperatures drop, many Minnesotans face the challenge of managing their heating costs. Fortunately, the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program (EAP) is here to help. The program is actively seeking more applications as it continues to provide critical support to households across the state.

Financial Relief for Heating Bills and System Repairs

The EAP, which is funded by federal dollars, has already served over 68,000 households this heating season, distributing more than $40 million in assistance. According to Michael Schmitz of the Minnesota Department of Commerce, the state received $112 million in federal funding for the program, and roughly one-third of it has already been spent. This means that there are still funds available, and now is the time for eligible Minnesotans to apply.

The average benefit for recipients is approximately $550. However, the amount can be higher, depending on the householdโ€™s income, fuel costs, and specific needs, with some households receiving up to $1,400 in assistance.

Who Can Apply?

Both renters and homeowners are eligible to apply, as long as they meet income and household size requirements. For example, a family of four could earn up to $68,845 annually and still qualify for assistance. The program is designed to help those in need, whether itโ€™s covering the cost of monthly energy bills or helping with emergency repairs to heating systems that are not working properly.

How Does It Work?

The program directly pays energy companies or providers of heating fuel, such as propane, fuel oil, or wood, on behalf of eligible households. Once approved, the benefit is sent directly to the utility company, helping families manage the costs of keeping their homes warm during the harsh Minnesota winters.

Emergency support is also available for households facing immediate risks, such as a malfunctioning heating system or other energy-related crises.

A Call to Action: Apply Before Itโ€™s Too Late

The deadline to apply for assistance for the 2024-2025 heating season is May 31, 2025. But, as Schmitz points out, itโ€™s important to apply sooner rather than later to ensure that you receive the help you need before funds run out.

Minnesotaโ€™s Energy Assistance Program is federally funded and administered by the Department of Commerce, in partnership with local service providers across the state. These funds can make a significant difference for families struggling with energy costs, so itโ€™s worth taking the time to apply.
