On Saturday, January 18, the Sabathani Banquet Room will transform into a hub of culinary excellence and community connection for the Big Mama’s Cook-Off Challenge. From 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm, come celebrate the rich heritage of soul food while honoring the resilience and creativity that has sustained our community for generations.

This event isn’t just a cook-off; it’s a tribute to the wisdom and traditions of our elders, the recipes passed down through countless Sunday dinners, and the flavors that tell our stories. Whether you’re here to compete or simply enjoy the festivities, you’ll leave with a full belly and a full heart.
The Dish Categories:
Competitors will showcase their skills in seven categories, each offering a unique slice of our culinary heritage:
- Meat (5 slots)
- Vegetables (5 slots)
- Mac and Cheese (5 slots)
- Dressing (5 slots)
- Salads (5 slots)
- Dessert (5 slots)
- Vegan Soul Food (5 slots)
Each dish will be judged not just on flavor, but on the love and history it brings to the table.
Why Compete?
Not only will you get to share your best dish with the community, but every competitor will receive a $50 gift card to help cover supply costs. And, of course, there are prizes for the top dishes in each category!
Who Can Join?
This event is open to seniors 55+ and their families, offering a chance to bond over food, stories, and shared experiences.
