As we ring in 2025, Metro Transit has rolled out a series of fare changes aimed at making public transportation more accessible and affordable for all. Approved by the Metropolitan Council last November, these changes took effect on January 1, 2025, and reflect a commitment to equity and ease of use for the regionโ€™s transit system.

Key Fare Changes Now in Effect

  1. Flat Fare for Non-Express Buses and Light Rail
    • Full-priced fares are now $2 all day, every day.
    • Youth, seniors, and Medicare recipients can ride for just $1 all day, every day.
  2. Reduced Pass Prices
    • All-Day Passes now cost between $2 and $4, depending on the service.
    • The cost of 7-Day Passes has been reduced to $20, offering savings for frequent riders.
  3. Metro Mobility Fare Pilot
    • Certified Metro Mobility riders can use Metro Transit and regional transit providers for one cent per ride through June 30, 2025. This pilot program will help shape long-term fare policies.
  4. Expanded TAP Program Benefits
    • Participants in the Transit Assistance Program (TAP) can now enjoy $1 fares for up to two years before needing to reapply. TAP eligibility remains income-based, ensuring affordability for those who need it most.

Making Transit More Accessible

โ€œMaking transit easier to use is key to growing ridership, and we believe simplifying fares will help do just that,โ€ said Metro Transit General Manager Lesley Kandaras. โ€œThese changes also support our belief that cost should not be a barrier for those who want or need access to our services.โ€

Metro Transit projects an increase of over 926,000 rides in 2025 as a direct result of these fare adjustments. The organization remains committed to removing barriers and ensuring that public transit serves as a lifeline for all members of the community.

Ridership Growth and System Upgrades

Through September 2024, Metro Transit recorded more than 35.8 million rides, marking an 8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. With fare changes and further initiatives, the system is poised for continued growth in 2025.

Additionally, Metro Transit is gearing up for its first comprehensive upgrade of fare collection equipment in two decades. Over the next few years, riders will gain access to modernized payment options, including mobile phone and credit card taps, making it even easier to access transit services.

Find the Fare Thatโ€™s Right for You

Riders are encouraged to explore the fare products and programs that best meet their needs. Information is available through the Transit Information Center or at Metro Transit Service Centers.

With affordability, simplicity, and innovation at its core, 2025 is shaping up to be a transformative year for Metro Transit and its riders.
