The 13th Annual People of Color Career Fair is coming up on April 15, and registration is open. The large-scale event takes place at Saint Paulโs RiverCentre โ Exhibit Hall A & B โ and features networking opportunities, free headshots, a continental breakfast, and more.

The role career fairs play
For many people of color in Minnesota, traditional job fairs and recruitment channels often fall short of addressing their unique challenges. Discrimination, lack of access to professional networks, and limited mentorship opportunities are just a few of the hurdles they face in navigating their career journeys. This negatively impacts the household income of these communities, which has remained substantially low state-wide. In 2022, after adjusting for inflation, the median income for Black families was $34,377 less than their white counterparts.

Minnesota is known for its rich history of diversity and resilience, especially in the Metro area, but its communities of color continue to face significant barriers to employment and career advancement. This People of Color Career Fair has been instrumental in connecting underrepresented job seekers with employers committed to fostering a more inclusive workforce.
For employers, participating in a People of Color Career Fair is more than just good PR โ itโs a commitment to change. When people of color have access to stable, well-paying jobs, they can invest back into their neighborhoods, support local businesses, and contribute to the cityโs overall economic growth.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has been a regular supporter of the event, often acknowledging founder Sharon Smith-Akinsanya for her impact.

โExcited to see the People Of Color Career Fair addressing employment inequalities and providing diverse professionals the chance to connect with Minneapolis employers directly,โ said Frey via Facebook post. โA big thank you to everyone involved and to Sharon Smith-Akinsanya for your outstanding leadership!โ
This kind of empowerment has a positive ripple effect on marginalized communities, promoting prosperity and opportunity for future generations.
