A Rhythmic Ministry with Purpose
Sean Burns is redefining the art of stepping, blending the rhythmic traditions of Black Greek life with the transformative power of faith. Through his program, Step With Soul, Burns teaches young people not only the intricate choreography of step routines but also invaluable life lessons rooted in spirituality, discipline, and community.

Founded in 2009, Step With Soul began with a simple step routine for youth at Wayman AME Church in Minneapolis. Over time, it evolved into a movement of empowerment, inspiring young steppers to celebrate their cultural heritage while embracing the values of prayer, kindness, and service.

Faith Through Movement
For Burns, stepping is more than just an art formโ€”itโ€™s a ministry. He emphasizes spiritual principles alongside technical precision, encouraging youth to channel their faith through every stomp and clap. Burns says his goal is to foster a deeper connection between movement and spiritual expression. โ€œI teach the technical parts first, drilling until it becomes second nature. Then, we have candid conversations about what it means to minister through stepping.โ€

Challenges and Triumphs
While the program has touched hundreds of lives, it hasnโ€™t been without challenges. Convincing young participants to forgo popular music with negative messages in favor of spiritually uplifting tracks is an ongoing effort. Burns seeks guidance from others in the step industry to curate music that aligns with his mission.

One of the programโ€™s most memorable moments occurred after a performance in St. Louis, Missouri. A mother approached Burns, moved by the ministryโ€™s message, and asked if her son could join Step With Soul. โ€œI need and want more for my son,โ€ she told him, underscoring the profound impact of his work.

Expanding the Vision
Burns has big plans for the future of Step With Soul. He envisions expanding to schools, churches, and community centers throughout the Twin Cities, offering after-school programs and step camps. He also aims to establish chapters in other states and create a step production team to tell impactful stories through the art form.

As Burns reflects on his journey, he credits Step With Soul with deepening his faith and giving him a blueprint for living a Christian life. โ€œIโ€™m not perfect; we all fall short of the glory,โ€ he says, โ€œbut my faith walk is intentional and essential to me.โ€

Step With Soul continues to move with purpose, inspiring young steppers to make joyful noiseโ€”not just with their feet, but with their lives.
