In the heart of Minneapolis, a movement is growingโone thatโs as much about empowerment as it is about planting seeds. Plant-Grow-Share, a program rooted in the Black communityโs long tradition of resilience and resourcefulness, is launching an eight-month urban farming academy designed to give local residents the tools to cultivate their own food, their way.
This isnโt just about farming. Itโs about justice. Itโs about reclaiming ownership of our food systems in neighborhoods where access to fresh, culturally relevant food has been denied for far too long. With the Minneapolis Urban Farm Academy, Plant-Grow-Share is providing an opportunity for Black, Indigenous, and Latine farmersโalongside low-income residentsโto reconnect with the soil, rebuild food sovereignty, and strengthen our community.
Rooted in Resilience
For those with at least one season of food-growing experience, this program offers the next step. Over the course of eight months, participants will dive deep into everything from business planning to farm design, learning how to grow at a production level and sell their harvest at Minneapolis farmersโ markets.

But this isnโt just about skillsโitโs about transformation. โFarming in the city is about more than food; itโs about reclaiming agency over our lives and our health,โ says a representative for Plant-Grow-Share.
The program emphasizes the values of antiracism, decentralized power, and personal growth, cultivating a space where participants can thrive while addressing systemic inequities in food access.
For Us, By Us
Plant-Grow-Share knows who it serves: the Central and Bryant neighborhoods, where disparities in food access remain deeply entrenched. It prioritizes Black, Indigenous, and Latine community members, making sure those whoโve been historically excluded from land ownership and food systems are at the center of this initiative.
