In a distressing case underscoring the continuing struggle against juvenile crime, a Minneapolis mother has been charged with aiding an offender and contributing to the delinquency of a child after allegedly giving her son a firearm. The charges stem from an investigation into violent incidents linked to a group of juvenile offenders in the city.
Last summer, Minneapolis police initiated a Crime Spree Protocol after a series of violent events, including a gun-pointing incident, occurred within a short period. Officers tracked a suspect vehicle, linked to these crimes, to a multifamily residence. Three juvenile boys, aged 14 to 16, were found fleeing from the vehicle, two of whom ran into an apartment. Upon conducting a search, officers recovered several firearms inside the apartment, where two of the juveniles had sought refuge.
Authorities later discovered that Tashalon Adams, the mother of one of the boys, had knowingly provided her sonโa known offender involved in serious criminal activitiesโwith one of the guns. The Hennepin County Attorneyโs Office officially charged Adams on January 8, 2025.
What Happened in the Case?
According to court documents, Adams admitted to keeping a firearm at her residence for her son. She explained that she gave it to him when he said he needed it for “protection.” Police have connected her son to several armed carjackings and robberies.
Adams faces multiple charges, including felony aiding an offender, providing a firearm to an ineligible person, and contributing to the delinquency of a child.
In a statement, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian OโHara expressed concern over the growing issue of illegal firearms in the hands of young people. โItโs outrageous to think that a parent would arm their child, especially one known to have been involved in violent crime,โ he said. โThis case highlights the importance of holding adults accountable for their actions and addressing the broader issue of gun violence involving juveniles.โ
The Impact of Illegal Guns in Our Communities
This case is just one example of how illegal guns continue to make their way into our communities and fall into the wrong hands. Chief O’Hara stressed that itโs crucial for the community to work together to stop the flow of firearms to young offenders. โWe need to identify those adults who are enabling juveniles by giving them access to guns,โ he emphasized.
Hennepin County Attorneyโs Office Weighs In
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty condemned the actions of Adams, stating that providing a firearm to a juvenile is a dangerous act with grave consequences. “Guns in young hands lead to tragedy, from accidental discharges to outright violence,” Moriarty said. “In this case, Tashalon Adams facilitated access to a firearm for her child who she knew was not legally permitted to possess it. Her actions put not only her son but the entire community at risk.”
Next Steps and Community Responsibility
As this case moves forward, law enforcement officials are continuing their efforts to identify and hold accountable others who may be involved in facilitating illegal gun access for minors. Chief O’Hara calls on all members of the community, especially parents, to take responsibility in curbing gun violence.
โThis isnโt just about one individual caseโitโs about the safety of our children and our neighborhoods,โ said Chief O’Hara. โWe need parents to do their part by ensuring their children arenโt involved in illegal activities. Parents are the first line of defense.โ
As the investigation continues, this case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by illegally possessed firearms and the significant role adults play in shaping the outcomes for our youth.
