A New Weekly Series Exploring the Rich History of the MSR

We’re excited to introduce Opening the Archives, a new weekly video series that delves into the incredible history preserved in the pages of the Minneapolis Spokesman, St. Paul Recorder, and Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder. With over 8,000 stories chronicling the Black experience in Minnesota and beyond, this series aims to bring history to life, one story at a time.

Each episode will take you back in time, offering a glimpse into the events and individuals who shaped our community and the world.

This Week: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As we close out January, we pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This week’s episode revisits several poignant moments, including his visits to Minneapolis and the community’s heartfelt response to his assassination.

Through archival stories, we highlight the memorial ads and tributes featured in the pages of the MSR following Dr. King’s passing. These ads were more than simple announcements—they were profound expressions of love, sorrow, and a collective commitment to carry forward his mission of equality and justice.

Why Opening the Archives Matters

The Opening the Archives series is more than a trip down memory lane—it’s a celebration of our shared history and a testament to the enduring power of Black journalism. By revisiting these stories, we honor the voices of the past and connect them to the ongoing struggles and triumphs of today.

Stay tuned for more powerful stories in the weeks ahead as we continue to open the archives and shed light on the moments that shaped our community.
