Basketball in the Cities: A day at Mac

Covering MIAC basketball over the years is a welcome change from pro hoops and big time college basketball as well. Each year I spend a day watching Division III hoops, and last Saturday we did just that at Macalester College in St. Paul in our annual โ€œBasketball in the Cities.โ€

Late in the Jan. 18 contest between Macalester and Saint Maryโ€™s, Robert Grace IV made the defensive stop of the game when he was mismatched with a taller player. The 5โ€™10โ€ senior guard kept his man from getting the ball at the high post, which helped preserve Macโ€™s 61-56 victory.

โ€œWe knew I had four fouls [and] theyโ€™re trying to give me my fifth,โ€ explained the Minneapolis native after the game. โ€œI knew if I just pushed him out far enough without going to foulโ€ฆthey werenโ€™t going to try to force it in there.โ€

Grace either scored or assisted on eight of Macโ€™s first 10 points, and he finished the contest with five points.

This is his final season at Macalester.

โ€œDefinitely time flies,โ€ he admitted, โ€œespecially playing basketball on the court with nine games left at least. So I’m just trying to give everything I can for my teammates.โ€

The younger Grace has used college not only to play basketball but also to get an education and carve out a career for himself. โ€œI knew I was always going to try to find something that I want to do and put the time in for myself,โ€ he said. โ€œI was always just trying to hustleโ€ฆ I was able to do a lot of things [at Macalester].

โ€œI always knew I was going to be an entrepreneur,โ€ said Grace, who last month was hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves. โ€œIt started out as a hobby. I was just doing some freelance stuff with the players, so I was in the building the past couple seasons. In December, they offered me a full-time job. Iโ€™m a full-time videographer for the Wolves,โ€ he said proudly.

Finallyโ€ฆ

Former MIAC member St. Thomas, now in D1, was my last stop on last weekendโ€™s hoop fest. The Tommies defeated Denver 74-62 in Summit League play.
