Behind the Gates: A Glimpse Into Daytime’s Newest Story

Set in a gated community in the Maryland/D.C. area, the series follows the Duprees, an affluent family grappling with personal and societal challenges. The ensemble cast includes acclaimed actors Clifton Davis, Tamara Tunie, Daphnee Duplaix, and Karla Mosley. The show explores themes of love, ambition, and identity while showcasing a cultural authenticity rarely seen in daytime television.

Unlike its predecessors Passions (1999) or the long-standing Days of Our Lives, Beyond the Gates is a pioneer in both representation and location. Filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, it stands apart from its counterparts, which traditionally shoot in Los Angeles. The production boasts 27 expansive sets meticulously designed by Bruton Jones to reflect the luxury and complexity of the Dupree family’s world.

Jeresa Featherstone, the show’s costume designer and a veteran of The Bold and the Beautiful, shared her excitement:
“It just feels at home. I know these people. It’s about family, it’s about fashion. We love to get dressed.”

Hair designer Wankaya Hinkson also highlighted the importance of showcasing diverse beauty:
“I wanted everyone to see themselves on television and to see how different we can wear our hair. Natural hair textures can be just as beautiful as straight.”

Sheila Ducksworth and Michele Val Jean: Visionaries Behind the Scenes

Executive producer Sheila Ducksworth and head writer/showrunner Michele Val Jean bring a wealth of experience and vision to the series. Speaking about the journey to bring Beyond the Gates to life, Val Jean emphasized its groundbreaking nature:
“You haven’t seen a soap like this. You just haven’t.”

“I think it will change lives. TV has the power to open eyes, change perspectives, and bring people together. I believe Beyond the Gates will do just that.”

A Focus on Representation and Storytelling

Beyond the Gates not only highlights the lived experiences of Black families but also integrates cultural nuances into every aspect of its production. The costumes, hairstyles, and set designs collectively celebrate the richness of Black culture, presenting a layered and authentic narrative.
