Honoring Black Identity Through Art

Art has always been a powerful tool for storytelling, resistance, and self-expression in Black communities. This February, Minneapolis Public Schools is proud to present Who I Am: Celebrate Identity, an exhibition showcasing the work of local Black artists, including students, staff, and pieces from the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum.

The exhibit, running from February 3 through March 1 at the Davis Center Gallery (1250 W. Broadway Ave.), highlights the beauty, strength, and complexity of Black identity. Featuring works from celebrated artists such as Karla Kweje, seangarrison, Charles Caldwell, Tikonwaun Blackamore, Nnamdi Darlington, and Justice Jaโ€™Vonne, this collection amplifies voices that have long shaped Minnesotaโ€™s cultural landscape.

A Night of Celebration

The community is invited to an opening reception on Tuesday, February 4, at 6:00 p.m. at the Davis Center Gallery. This special evening will not only introduce visitors to the powerful pieces on display but also serve as a gathering space for conversation, connection, and celebration of Black artistry.

A centerpiece of the exhibit is Unbreakable: Celebrating the Resilience of African Americans in Minnesota, a collection that honors the strength and perseverance of Black Minnesotans throughout history. This exhibition is more than just a displayโ€”itโ€™s a testament to the legacy of resilience, creativity, and self-determination in the Black community.

More Than an Exhibitโ€”A Movement

At a time when representation matters more than ever, Who I Am: Celebrate Identity stands as a declaration of pride and presence. This exhibition is an opportunity for the community to witness, reflect, and celebrate the diverse expressions of Black identity through art.

Whether you are an art lover, an advocate for representation, or simply looking to be inspired, this is an event you wonโ€™t want to miss. Mark your calendar, bring a friend, and come experience the power of Black art.
