On Saturday, February 8, 2025, the Minneapolis Convention Center will host one of the most impactful civic engagement events of the yearโ€”the Community Connections Conference. Designed to bring together residents, community groups, and local government, this free annual event is more than just a meeting place; itโ€™s a movement.

Participation is Power

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œParticipation is Power: Speak, Act, Grow,โ€ is a call to action for Black communities and all underrepresented voices in Minneapolis. Too often, critical decisions are made without the input of those most affected. This conference aims to change that by giving people real opportunities to influence policies, build connections, and gain the knowledge needed to advocate for their communities.

  • Speak: Share your perspective on local issues and help shape the future of Minneapolis.
  • Act: Get involved in your neighborhood, vote, or even join a city board.
  • Grow: Learn new strategies to uplift your community and improve daily life.

More Than Just Talk

This isnโ€™t just another event where officials talk at the people. Itโ€™s an interactive experience featuring over 100 booths from local organizations and city leaders ready to listen. There will be workshops on food justice, healthcare access, and civic engagement, plus performances from local Black artists, because celebrating culture is just as important as discussing policy.

Attendees will also enjoy a free lunch, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and networking opportunities with city leaders in a welcoming space designed to foster real relationships.

Breaking Barriers to Access

For too long, systemic barriers have kept Black and other marginalized communities from fully participating in local government. The Community Connections Conference seeks to remove those barriers by ensuring that everyone feels welcome, has access to resources, and can engage in decision-making in ways that matter.

Recognizing that transportation can be an obstacle, Metro Transit is offering free rides on buses and light rail from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on conference day. Just download a pass or print it out to ride for free.

Be in the Room

If weโ€™re not in the room, decisions will be made without us. The Community Connections Conference is an opportunity to change thatโ€”to show up, be heard, and make an impact. Whether youโ€™re registering a business, looking for resources, or simply wanting to connect with neighbors and leaders, this is an event you donโ€™t want to miss.

Pre-register online today or register in person on the day of the event. Because participation isnโ€™t just powerโ€”itโ€™s our responsibility.

Before the Vote. Not After.

The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder is raising $75,000 to fund a dedicated Government Reporter who ensures decisions affecting our community are covered before the vote. Housing, public safety, education, and economic equity are being decided right now at City Hall, the State Capitol, county boards, and school boards.

Too often, our community finds out after the vote. Your support changes that.
