Bison basketball on a roll

Both Howard University basketball teams head into this weekendโ€™s games on a roll.

The Bison women knocked off North Carolina Central 81-64 at home then defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 66-56 on the road to extend its win streak to three straight and improve to 6-1 MEAC, 13-9 overall.

Their male counterpart improved to 5-2 MEAC, 10-14 overall thanks to two wins โ€“ 82-78 over North Carolina Central and 77-57 over Maryland Eastern Shore, which snapped a five-game losing streak going into the two contests.

Minneapolis native Joshua Strongโ€™s two free throws after the graduate guard hustled and secured the ball off a missed close-range shot with 2.2 seconds remaining helped clinched the win over NCCU โ€“ he, Jaren Johnson and Calvin Robins, Jr. combined for 18 points of Howardโ€™s points during a second half rally that pushed the Bison to a 20 point lead but the Eagles slowly erased that deficit and got back into the contest.

HU frosh guard Saniyah King continues her drive to earn MEAC Rookie of the Year with her consistent play โ€“ she leads the conference in assists, had seven assists in the Bisonโ€™s win over NCCU and six assists against UMES.

Both Howard teams are back in action this Saturday on the road at Delaware State.

MEAC weekly hoops honors

South Carolina Stateโ€™s Omar Croskey (Player of the Week), and Howard teammates Blake Harper and Ayodele Taiwo both earned Rookie of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week honors respectively, the conference announced on Monday.

Howardโ€™s Zennia Thomas was named Player of the Week, Ericka Huggins (Delaware State) was named Rookie of the Week, and North Carolina Centralโ€™s Jada Tiggett got Defensive Player of the Week in womenโ€™s basketball this week.
