Minnesota Transgender Man Endures Weeks of Torture Before Grisly Murder
The brutal murder of 24-year-old Sam Nordquist has sent shockwaves through both Minnesota and New York, as disturbing details of his prolonged torture and death come to light. Nordquist, a transgender man from Oakdale, Minnesota, was subjected to unimaginable cruelty before his body was discarded in a desolate field in upstate New York.
Now, five individuals face murder charges in what authorities are calling one of the most horrifying crimes they have ever investigated. The case raises urgent questions about the targeting of transgender individuals, the dangers of online relationships, and the ongoing crisis of violence against the LGBTQIA+ community.
A Month of Horror Ends in Tragedy
Investigators believe Nordquist suffered weeks of relentless physical and psychological abuse at the hands of his alleged killers. His body bore evidence of repeated beatings with sticks, canes, belts, a table leg, and even a broomstick—methods of torture that police say escalated over time.
Nordquist had traveled to New York in September 2024, reportedly to meet an online girlfriend. He had been staying at Patty’s Lodge, a motel in Canandaigua, about 30 minutes from Rochester, with Precious Arzuaga—one of the individuals now charged in his murder. His family, worried after losing contact with him, launched a desperate search, even starting a GoFundMe to raise money for travel expenses. Their worst fears were confirmed when authorities found human remains in Yates County on February 13, later identified as Nordquist.
Law enforcement officials have described this case as “beyond depraved.” New York State Police Captain Kelly Swift, a 20-year law enforcement veteran, stated, “No human being should have to endure what Sam endured.”
Five Suspects Arrested, Possible Hate Crime Investigation
Five suspects—Precious Arzuaga (38), Jennifer A. Quijano (30), Kyle Sage (33), Patrick A. Goodwin (19), and Emily Motyka (19)—have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Each faces the possibility of 15 years to life in prison if convicted.
While the charges are severe, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are still working to determine the exact nature of the relationship between Nordquist and his alleged killers. Prosecutors have also not ruled out the possibility of upgrading charges to include a hate crime, given the disturbing nature of the attack and Nordquist’s identity as a transgender man.
The Ontario County District Attorney, James Ritts, acknowledged the severity of the case, stating, “The facts and the circumstances of this crime are beyond depraved.”
A Mother’s Grief, A Community in Mourning
Nordquist’s mother, Linda, is now left grappling with the unthinkable loss of her son. She described Sam as a kind-hearted animal lover who worked in a home for vulnerable adults. He had always been a person of deep compassion, someone who sought to care for others. “He had a heart of gold and wouldn’t hurt anybody,” she told KARE.
His death has sent ripples of grief and outrage through the transgender and LGBTQIA+ communities, both in Minnesota and across the country. Rochester City Council members Mary Lupien, Stanley Martin, and Kim Smith issued a statement expressing their condolences and reaffirming their support for transgender individuals:
“Our Trans and LGBTQIA+ residents are, and have always been, integral to the fabric of our communities.”
Nordquist’s death is not an isolated incident. In 2023, at least 35 transgender and gender-expansive individuals were murdered in the U.S., according to Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund. Many believe this number is an undercount, as transgender violence often goes unreported or misclassified.

This case is a grim reminder of the dangers faced by transgender individuals in a society where anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric continues to fuel violence and discrimination. While authorities work to bring Nordquist’s killers to justice, advocacy groups are calling for broader conversations on protecting transgender lives, from policy changes to community-driven safety initiatives.
