Celebrating Generations of Comedy, Legacy, and Cultural Impact
On Saturday, February 22, 2025, the Wayans family will receive one of the most prestigious honors in entertainment: induction into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The 56th NAACP Image Awards, airing live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, will mark a significant moment in television and comedy history as this legendary family is celebrated for their trailblazing contributions to the industry.
The induction ceremony will take place at 8:00 PM ET/PT on BET and CBS, and the award will honor the collective achievements of Keenen Ivory Wayans, Kim Wayans, Damon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, and Damon Wayans Jr. for their profound impact on comedy and entertainment. The Wayans familyโs revolutionary work in television, film, and stand-up has broken barriers, pushed boundaries, and opened doors for generations of entertainers.
A Legacy of Excellence and Innovation
โFor decades, the Wayans family has been at the forefront of comedy, breaking barriers and opening doors for waves of entertainers,โ said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. โTheir trailblazing work has transcended pop culture and cemented their legacy in the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. This recognition celebrates a multi-generational legacy that continues to uplift communities and advance the standard of excellence in entertainment.โ
The Wayans family has set a standard for Black excellence in Hollywood, creating space for diverse voices and perspectives in mainstream comedy. From Keenen Ivory Wayans creating the groundbreaking sketch comedy show In Living Color to their iconic blockbuster films like Scary Movie and White Chicks, the Wayans have redefined the comedy landscape, both culturally and commercially.
The Revolution of Comedy
In 1990, Keenen Ivory Wayans brought In Living Color to Fox, a game-changing sketch show that not only introduced a diverse cast of emerging talent but also brought socially relevant humor to the forefront. Stars like Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Lopez, and many others rose to fame through the show. With his fearless humor and keen cultural commentary, Keenen proved that comedy could break societal norms and address race, class, and pop culture with unapologetic boldness.

Over the years, the Wayans family continued to push the boundaries of entertainment. Damon Wayans Sr. became a comedy icon through his work on Saturday Night Live, Major Payne, and My Wife and Kids. Marlon and Shawn Wayans co-created and starred in the Scary Movie franchise, White Chicks, and Donโt Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Their work in both film and television has made them some of the most recognized names in Hollywood.
A New Generation of Talent
The Wayans family’s legacy continues with the next generation, including Damon Wayans Jr., who has carried the familyโs comedic brilliance into the present day with standout roles in Happy Endings, New Girl, and Letโs Be Cops. Marlon Wayans, who has also expanded his dramatic range with performances in Respect and Air, is currently touring the country with his WILD CHILD Tour and is set to star in Jordan Peele’s upcoming film HIM.
The Wayans familyโs commitment to excellence continues to shape the comedy industry. This year, the family is set to bring a Scary Movie reboot to theaters in 2026, introducing a new generation to their iconic brand of horror-comedy.
A Tribute to Black Excellence in Comedy and Culture
In addition to the award, Connie Orlando, EVP of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy at BET, praised the Wayans family for revolutionizing comedy by blending cultural commentary with fearless humor. โTheir influence spans generations, breaking barriers for Black entertainers and redefining mainstream comedy,โ she said. โWe look forward to honoring their impact and inducting them into the NAACP Hall of Fame live on BET while celebrating their legacy in entertainment and culture.โ
