Nature enthusiasts are invited to experience the serene beauty of winter at Mni Owe Sni (Coldwater Spring) during the Winter Wander and Wonder Walk on Saturday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Hosted by the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, this guided walk will take participants through the snow-covered oak savanna, highlighting the ecosystem’s unique winter features.

A national park ranger will lead the event, offering insights into the history, ecology, and cultural significance of the landscape. The walk, suitable for all ages, will cover up to a half-mile, depending on trail conditions. Attendees are advised to dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water, as no heating facilities will be available.

Preparing for Winter Conditions

Participants should be prepared for snowy or icy terrain. Recommended equipment includes traction devices and trekking poles. The event will take place rain, snow, or shine, and guests may be turned away if not adequately prepared for the conditions.

Getting There

Check-in will occur in the parking lot at Mni Owe Sni. The location is accessible via the Metro Transit Blue Line, and metered street parking is available. The site also offers four accessible parking spaces and bike racks.
