Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) has introduced legislation to designate June 14 as a federal holiday, honoring both former President Donald J. Trump’s birthday and Flag Day.
The Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act aims to recognize Trump’s contributions to the nation alongside the adoption of the U.S. flag.
“Just as George Washington’s Birthday is codified as a federal holiday, this bill will add Trump’s birthday to the list, recognizing him as the founder of America’s Golden Age,” Tenney said in a press release. She cited Trump’s role in brokering the Abraham Accords and implementing tax cuts as key achievements warranting this honor.
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters argue that it is a fitting tribute to Trump’s impact, while critics question the necessity and appropriateness of such a designation. The bill’s progression through Congress remains uncertain, especially given the need for bipartisan support in both chambers.
This initiative follows other recent efforts to honor Trump, including proposals to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after him and to add his likeness to Mount Rushmore. However, these efforts have faced significant legislative hurdles.
Flag Day, observed on June 14, commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official U.S. flag in 1777. While widely recognized, it is not a federal holiday. Trump, born on June 14, 1946, shares his birthday with this patriotic observance.
As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, Tenney argues that creating this combined holiday would enshrine both Trump’s contributions and the significance of the American flag in law.
