For more than five decades, Bobby Commodore has been the heartbeat of the Twin Cities music scene. His drumming has anchored gospel choirs, electrified jazz ensembles, and given soul to some of the most celebrated stages in Minnesota. Now, as he celebrates his seventy-second birthday, Bobby is taking a final bow behind the kitโbut not without one last unforgettable night of music.
On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the legendary drummer will gather some of his closest collaborators, past and present, for a Retirement Jam at 7 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.). Tickets start at $25.47โan incredible price for an evening of musical excellence honoring one of the greats.
A Musical Journey Like No Other
Bobby Commodoreโs career has been nothing short of extraordinary. He got his start playing gospel, lending his rhythmic touch to the Steele Family, the Sam Davis Gospel Ensemble, and the Rance Majestic Choir. But it was his time with the Grammy Awardโwinning Sounds of Blackness that propelled him onto the national stage. Touring and recording with the ensemble not only sharpened his skills but also led him to meet his wife, celebrated vocalist Ginger Commodore.
From there, Bobby transitioned into jazz, joining the renowned Moore by Four (MB4) as both drummer and business manager. For twelve years, he helped shape the ensembleโs sound, taking their music from sold-out local performances to world-class jazz festivals across the globe.
Beyond gospel and jazz, Bobbyโs versatility has made him a fixture at the Guthrie Theater, Orchestra Hall, the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, and the Fitzgerald Theater. Whether leading the rhythm section or directing music for Ginger Commodore & GCQ, his influence has left an indelible mark on the Twin Cities music scene.
