A new herbal shop in North Minneapolis is blending tradition and healing with a mission to offer holistic health solutions to people of all backgrounds and incomes.

Natural Me Apothecary opened its doors in the Camden neighborhood last November, offering more than 300 herbs, herbal remedies, and fresh juices. Owned by Eva Garrett, the shop is believed to be the first Black woman-owned apothecary in the city.

A Personal Connection to the Community

โ€œI think itโ€™s super dope and healing,โ€ Garrett said. โ€œI really wish I had something like this when I was younger.โ€

Garrett, an experienced herbalist, makes her own Black Beau-Tea but aims to do more than just sell productsโ€”she is cultivating healthier alternatives for her community.

The shop’s location is especially meaningful to Garrett, who grew up in North Minneapolis. She believes her deep connection to the community and knowledge of local culture will help her reach people in need of alternatives to conventional medicine.

โ€œI know the culture here. I know there arenโ€™t a lot of herbal shops nearby,โ€ Garrett said. โ€œA lot of people, if they have the knowledge, theyโ€™ll do better.โ€

A Passion for Plant-Based Healing

Garrett’s passion for herbalism grew during her work with organizations like Appetite for Change and Frogtown Farm, where she taught people to grow their own food and explore the medicinal uses of herbs. Her experiences have shaped her belief that natural remedies can improve health outcomes, especially for African Americans, who experience higher rates of chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

โ€œLearning to take things that God has made to heal yourself, I think that’s the appeal,โ€ Garrett said.

Educating and Empowering the Community

With Natural Me Apothecary, Garrett hopes to empower her community by providing access to natural health solutions and education. She envisions her shop as a resource for people looking for alternatives to traditional medicine, giving them the knowledge to make healthier choices.

โ€œMy mission is to have this information right here for my people so they know they have another option,โ€ she said.

Looking Ahead: Grand Opening and Community Celebration

Garrett plans to host a grand opening in the coming months, marking the occasion with a block party alongside other Black-owned businesses in her building. The event will officially introduce Natural Me Apothecary to the broader community, furthering her goal of promoting wellness, education, and empowerment in North Minneapolis.
