Fans of The Princess and the Frog eagerly awaited Tiana, a Disney+ musical starring Anika Noni Rose, reprising her beloved role as Princess Tiana. However, excitement turned to disappointment with the announcement that Disney has officially canceled the series. The decision comes as part of a broader reimagining of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ approach to streaming content.

A Canceled Dream: What Happened to ‘Tiana’?

Initially revealed in 2020, the series was poised to bring the enchanting world of The Princess and the Frog to the small screen. However, despite multiple efforts to bring the project to fruition—including several creative team changes—Disney canceled the series due to high production costs.

This marks a significant shift in the company’s content strategy, as it pivots away from long-form streaming projects in favor of theatrical releases and short-form content.

In addition to Tiana, a previously unannounced feature film intended for Disney+ has also been scrapped. Though The Princess and the Frog remains an integral part of Disney’s legacy, with Tiana recently honored in the revamped Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attraction at Disney parks, the streaming series will not be moving forward.

Disney’s New Strategy: Short-Form Over Series

There is still hope for fans. Disney Animation is developing a short-form special inspired by The Princess and the Frog, with Joyce Sherri attached as one of the directors and writers.

This shift in focus aligns with Disney’s post-pandemic strategy, following a period when the company heavily invested in original content for Disney+. Now, the focus is shifting back to theatrical releases, which have recently performed strongly at the box office, such as Moana 2 and Inside Out 2.

What’s Next for Disney Animation?

Looking ahead, Disney Animation plans to release one feature film annually, including highly anticipated titles such as:

  • Zootopia 2 – Slated for release on Nov. 26, 2025
  • Frozen 3 – Set for 2027

While Tiana’s cancellation is disappointing for fans, Disney’s renewed focus on short-form content has already yielded successful projects, such as the Emmy-winning Zootopia+ and Baymax! These successes offer hope that beloved characters will continue to return in new and creative formats—even if Tiana’s Disney+ adventure will not be one of them.
