Shedding Light on a Hidden History
While the legacy of Negro League Baseball has received much-deserved attention, the equally fascinating and impactful story of Negro League Football has remained largely untold—until now.
Between 1933 and 1946, Black athletes faced systemic racism that excluded them from playing in mainstream professional football. In response, they formed their own leagues and teams, such as the Brown Bombers and the Chicago Comets, with influential figures like Duke Slater leading the charge.
“Negro League Football was born out of sheer necessity,” said Erica Ahmed, the founder of the project. “It’s time to honor the athletes who fought through adversity, showcasing their incredible courage and talent. My grandfather was the quarterback for the Harrisburg Trojans in 1941, and they went on to win the Negro World Championship. This movement isn’t just about remembering the past—it’s about educating the next generation and empowering those continuing to push for equality in sports today.”
Recognizing the Trailblazers of Negro League Football
Among the football legends whose contributions are being celebrated is Charles Follis, the first Black professional football player, who was known as “The Black Cyclone” in the early 1900s.
Another key figure is Frederick Douglass “Fritz” Pollard, who made history as the first African American head coach in the NFL, paving the way for future generations of Black coaches and players.
