Dawn Robinson, a founding member of En Vogue, has revealed that she has been living in her car for the past three years. The singer, best known for hits like Free Your Mind and Hold On, shared her story in a deeply personal YouTube video, detailing the circumstances that led to her unconventional and challenging lifestyle.
From stardom to survival
Robinson, 58, said her decision to live in her car stemmed from family tensions that led her to leave her parents’ home in Las Vegas in 2020. Initially, she sought refuge with her manager in Los Angeles, but after discovering there wasnโt space for her to stay, she moved into a hotel, where she remained for eight months.
During that time, Robinson began researching “car life” and was intrigued by the growing community of people who live in their vehicles by choice or necessity. In March 2022, she fully embraced the lifestyle, relocating to Malibu and adapting to her new reality.
“That first night was scary,” Robinson admitted, but she quickly adjusted and found a sense of freedom in her new way of living. She has since relied on a gym membership for showers and learned key safety measures, particularly as a woman living alone.
A message of resilience
Despite her hardships, Robinson has made it clear that she is not seeking sympathy.
“I felt free. That was a sense of freedom that I had,” she said. “I just felt like it was the right thing to do. I didnโt regret it.”
She emphasized that her journey is one of self-discovery, stating, “Iโm learning about who I am, as a person, as a woman.”
Ex-husband steps in with job offer
Following Robinsonโs revelation, her ex-husband, Andre Allen, has stepped forward to offer support. Allen, who was married to Robinson from 2003 to 2010, has extended a job opportunity with Hilton Brands in an effort to help her regain stability.
Allen, a former music industry executive and Grammy Award-winning producer, transitioned into the hospitality sector, where he says he has found greater financial success. While Robinson has cited family and management issues as contributing factors to her financial struggles, Allen believes her continued attachment to the music industry has played a role in her current circumstances.
Facing challenges head-on
In a message to her followers, Robinson expressed that her situation, while difficult, is part of a larger life lesson.
“Sometimes in life, we end up in situations that we werenโt expecting. Thereโs something we need to learn or teach, but weโre too afraid to push ourselves out of our comfort zones, so the universe does it for us,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Robinson remains determined and optimistic, stating, “Failure is not an option.”
A lasting legacy
As a founding member of En Vogue, Robinson played a pivotal role in the groupโs success, helping them sell more than 20 million records worldwide. Though she left the group in 1997, briefly returned in 2002, and departed again in 2008, her impact on R&B and pop music remains undeniable.
While her personal journey has taken unexpected turns, Robinson continues to face adversity with strength, embracing each challenge as part of her evolution.
