Minnesota state Sen. Justin Eichorn is facing bipartisan calls for his resignation following his arrest in Bloomington on allegations of soliciting a minor.

According to law enforcement officials, Eichorn was taken into custody after an undercover operation in which he allegedly attempted to arrange a meeting with someone he believed to be a 16-year-old girl. Authorities say he was arrested without incident.

A growing political scandal

Eichorn, a Republican from Grand Rapids, has been a member of the Minnesota Senate since 2016 and is known for his recent push to classify “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as a mental illness. His arrest has led to swift backlash from both parties, with many urging him to step down.

๐Ÿ“ข Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus: โ€œWe are shocked by these reports, and this alleged conduct demands an immediate resignation.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข House Speaker Lisa Demuth (R-Cold Spring): โ€œWhile he is entitled to due process, we must hold legislators to a higher standard.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul): โ€œThe felony allegation against Senator Eichorn is deeply disturbing.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข Minnesota DFL Executive Director Heidi Kraus Kaplan: โ€œNo one who solicits children belongs anywhere near public office or the State Capitol.โ€

Even members of his own party have been vocal.

๐Ÿ“ข Rep. Elliott Engen (R-White Bear Township): โ€œResign in disgrace.โ€

What comes next?

As of Tuesday afternoon, Eichorn remains in custody as formal charges are pending. His situation has drawn comparisons to Sen. Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury), who is currently facing felony charges in an unrelated case.

However, many state leaders argue that Eichornโ€™s situation demands immediate action, given the nature of the allegations.

A test for political accountability

Elected officials are entrusted with serving the public, and serious allegations such as these call for swift and decisive responses.

๐Ÿšซ If Eichorn does not resign, the Senate will need to determine the appropriate course of action.
๐Ÿšซ Legislators from both parties have signaled that this situation cannot be ignored.
๐Ÿšซ Public trust in elected officials depends on accountability.

As the situation develops, Minnesotans will be watching to see whether Eichorn steps down or whether the Senate will take action to address the controversy.
