About the film

Acts of Reparation follows two friendsโ€”one Black, one whiteโ€”on a journey to their ancestral lands in the South in search of a deeper understanding of reparations. Through personal storytelling, long-buried family histories, and unexpected revelations, their exploration reshapes their friendship and impacts their families and communities. The film serves as a poignant reminder that everyday actions can contribute to historical and racial justice.

Extending the conversation: Pink House Pop-up Family History Weekends

Beyond the film, the creators are launching a nationwide impact campaign: Pink House Pop-up Family History Weekends. Conceptualized by co-director Selina Lewis Davidson, this initiative will visit 10 cities, with a focus on Black communities and Great Migration cities, to help families recover, preserve, and share their histories. The filmmakers hope to return to the Twin Cities later this year for a pop-up weekend with local partners.

โ€œWhen asked in the film what reparations means to me, my response is that I need to know my history before I can even answer that question,โ€ said co-director Selina Lewis Davidson. โ€œOver the course of the film, you see me and my great-aunties on a treasure hunt for our ancestors and our stories and our efforts to preserve them for generations to come. Now, as we roll out the film, I am thrilled to be supporting local Black initiatives across the country to help everyday Black folks do the same.โ€

Co-director Macky Alston echoed the filmโ€™s message of collective action. โ€œWhat I hope you take away from Acts of Reparation is that, in these troubling political times, there are things that everyday Americans can do to advance justice and strengthen community across historical and racial divides. My life changed in the process of making this film in ways I never knew possible. The same is possible for everyone.โ€
