The legacy of Snowfall is set to continue. FX has officially given the green light for a pilot order of a highly anticipated spinoff featuring Gail Bean and Isaiah John, reprising their roles as Wanda Bell-Simmons and Leon Simmons, respectively.
A new chapter in South Central
Set in the early 1990s, the upcoming series shifts its focus to Wanda, a recovering addict determined to make her mark on the burgeoning West Coast rap scene while navigating the lingering dangers of gang violence. As she strives for a fresh start, Leon remains by her side, offering support as they both grapple with the fallout of the drug epidemic that defined the original series.
The show is expected to explore themes of redemption, ambition, and survival, expanding on the world created by the late John Singleton, who co-created Snowfall and brought the rise of the crack epidemic in 1980s Los Angeles to life with unflinching realism.
A natural continuation
For Snowfall fans, Wanda and Leon’s journey has been one of heartbreak, struggle, and resilience. Their relationship evolved over six seasons, drawing viewers into their tumultuous yet deeply connected bond. The decision to center a spinoff around them speaks to the lasting impact of their characters and the depth of their storylines.
Bean, who has also made waves with her roles in P-Valley and The Piano Lesson, brings a raw intensity and depth to Wanda’s character, making her evolution one of the most compelling in Snowfall. Meanwhile, John’s portrayal of Leon, a character torn between loyalty, morality, and survival, established him as a standout performer in the series.
FX doubles down on its hit series
Snowfall, which premiered in 2017 and concluded in 2023, became one of FX’s most critically acclaimed dramas, praised for its gritty storytelling and nuanced portrayal of the drug trade’s impact on Black communities. The show’s success has left an undeniable mark on television, making a spinoff a natural next step.
With production set to begin this summer, anticipation is already building. If the pilot gets picked up for a full series, fans can expect a fresh perspective on Snowfall’s world—one that dives into music, survival, and the fight for something greater in the wake of destruction.
FX has yet to announce a premiere date, but if the spinoff captures even a fraction of what made Snowfall a standout, viewers are in for an explosive, must-watch follow-up.
