The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) will host the second annual SMSC Dak̇ota Iapi Akiċiyapi (Dakota Language Bowl) on Thursday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Hoċokata Ṫi, the SMSC’s cultural center and Place of Gathering.

The event invites Dakota speakers of all ages and skill levels to celebrate the language through friendly competition, cultural engagement, and community connection.

Five competition categories

Teams of three may register in one of five categories:

  • Youth Beginner
  • Youth Intermediate
  • Adult Beginner
  • Adult Intermediate
  • NEW: Adult Advanced (for fluent speakers)

Participants will engage in quizzes, conversational challenges, and singing—all in Dakota. The youth competition will take place in the morning, with adult competitions in the afternoon.

  • Additional information, study guides, and prize details are available online
  • Discounted rooms are available at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel for attendees who reserve before April 8
