For five decades, the MayDay Parade has been a vibrant tradition in South Minneapolisโan annual celebration of spring, creativity, and community. Held on the first Sunday in May, the event brings together neighbors, artists, and activists to welcome the new season with music, pageantry, and hope.
Originally led by the visionary artists of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (HOBT), the MayDay Parade became known for its towering puppets, environmental themes, and a spirit of collective joy. Through workshops and community gatherings, residents helped shape the annual theme, building out costumes, floats, and performances that spoke to the moment.
While HOBT no longer organizes the parade in its entirety, the legacy of participatory art lives on. Today, the magic of MayDay is more decentralized than ever, with stunning puppets and performances crafted in homes, schools, studios, garages, and parks across the city. The creativity flows freelyโand the results are no less breathtaking.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of MayDay, and the tradition continues to thrive with bold colors, powerful messages, and a deep sense of connection. From joyous dancing and hand-painted banners to music that moves through the crowd like spring wind, the MayDay Parade remains a reflection of the cityโs heart.
