
The 49th Annual Winfield Awards student athlete banquet โ honoring 20 student athletes from 10 St. Paul high schools โ was held Sunday, June 1, at the Intercontinental St. Paul-Riverfront Hotel in St. Paul. Prior to honoring the student athletes, two important awards were presented.
Elsa Vega-Perez was presented the Trail Blazer Award for her work in the community, and it was likewise for Arline V. Winfield Award winner and legendary educator Shirley Kaiser.
Following the presentations honoring two of St. Paulโs finest, WCCO Radio personalities Henry Lake and Vineeta Sawkar presented the Winfield Awards recipients.
The following student athletes โ which include a female and male from each school โ were honored.
Central โ Regina Williams and Ademola Daniel Adedigba; Como Park โ Giselle Sanchez-Espera and Vincent Anderson; Cretin Derham Hall โ Taniysha Edwards and Keyon Archer; Harding โ Kalia Moe and Juanathan Williamson; Highland Park โ Mia Azocar Manske and Armando Carroll; Humboldt โ Ashley Tapia and Tony Wani; Johnson โ Sadie Mays and Isaiah Henderson; St. Agnes โ Serenity Skidmore and Joshua Lopez; St. Paul Academy and Summit โ Julia Taylor and Ezra Straub; Washington Technology โ Natalie Gallegos-Hardy and Shawn Huberty.
The Winfield Awards banquet was first held in 1977. It was created by Steve Winfield, who currently serves as committee chair, and his brother, major league baseball player and MLB Hall of Famer David M. Winfield.
