Dr. Tonya Jackman Hampton Debunks the Fearless Myth in Leadership
On August 25, Dr. Tonya Jackman Hampton will present The Myth of the Fearless Leader at Magers & Quinn in Minneapolis. In this deeply personal and practical new book, she challenges the outdated idea that leaders must hide fear to be effective—offering a new, authentic blueprint rooted in courage, clarity, and truth.

For decades, we’ve been sold a damaging myth: that great leaders are fearless. That to rise through the ranks, especially as a Black professional, you must leave fear at the door, mask your uncertainty, and show no vulnerability. But Dr. Tonya Jackman Hampton is here to challenge that lie with grace, grit, and a new blueprint for leadership.
On Monday, August 25 at 7 p.m., Dr. Jackman Hampton will present her powerful new book, The Myth of the Fearless Leader, at Magers & Quinn Booksellers in Minneapolis. The event is free and open to the public.
Courage is not the absence of fear
Dr. Jackman Hampton knows what it takes to lead at the highest levels. With more than 30 years of executive experience across Fortune 500 companies and nonprofit organizations, she’s helped shape cultures, teams, and strategy from the inside out. But in her new book, she strips away the corporate polish and gets real about what leadership actually looks like—especially for those of us who face workplace bias, microaggressions, and unrealistic expectations.
Instead of pretending fear doesn’t exist, Dr. Jackman Hampton invites us to confront it, understand it, and use it. She shows how anxiety and doubt can be signals for growth and self-awareness, not shame.
A guide for leaders at every stage
Part memoir, part manual, The Myth of the Fearless Leader offers personal stories, reflective prompts, and practical strategies to lead with authenticity. Whether you’re running a boardroom or leading in your community, the book challenges readers to stop hiding behind performance and instead lead with presence.
Her approach resonates deeply with Black professionals who are often asked to work twice as hard to prove we belong, only to be told not to show emotion, hesitation, or fear. Dr. Jackman Hampton reminds us that real leadership starts when we stop pretending.
A legacy of excellence rooted in community
Born and raised in Minnesota, Dr. Jackman Hampton is a proud alumna of Clark Atlanta University, where she earned her bachelor’s in political science with a prelaw focus. She went on to receive her MBA in human resources management and a Doctor of Education in organization development from the University of St. Thomas.
She is a certified executive coach and an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and The Links, Inc. Her life’s work is grounded in helping others find clarity, confidence, and purpose in their leadership journey.
Now living in San Diego with her husband and son, her heart remains tied to Minnesota and the community that shaped her.
