Southside Back In The Day Festival Returns to Phelps Park

Southside Back In The Day (SSBITD) celebrates its 16th year on Saturday, August 30, at Phelps Park in South Minneapolis. What began as a backyard gathering has grown into a community tradition drawing over 1,000 people each year. With music, food, sports, health resources, and the Guardian of the Story Award honoring journalist Al Brown, the festival embodies its theme, โ€œTrust & Believe: Everything is Going to Be Alright.โ€

What began as a backyard reunion has grown into one of South Minneapolisโ€™ most cherished community traditions. On Saturday, August 30, Southside Back In The Day (SSBITD) returns to Phelps Park for its 16th year, bringing neighbors, families, and friends together for a full day of music, food, sports, and wellness.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œTrust & Believe: Everything is Going to Be Alright,โ€ reflects the eventโ€™s enduring mission to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire hope for the future of the Southside.

From backyard to beloved festival

Founded by Phillip Crawford, along with his sister Lisa Crawford, Tony Price, Tiffany Price, Delores Price, Paul McDavid, and Bobby Tims, the first โ€œBack in the Dayโ€ gathering was held in Phillipโ€™s backyard. Sixteen years later, the event draws more than 1,000 residents annually, creating space for connection, joy, and unity.

What to expect

The 2025 festival lineup includes:

  • โ€˜90s Car Show โ€“ Classic rides and community favorites on display
  • 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament โ€“ Fast-paced games showcasing local talent
  • Free haircuts โ€“ A chance for youth and families to freshen up
  • Health resources โ€“ University of Minnesota Health Mobile onsite with support and screenings
  • Community Recognition Awards โ€“ Honoring those making a difference in South Minneapolis
  • Guardian of the Story Award โ€“ This yearโ€™s honoree is journalist Al Brown, recognized for his dedication to the Black press and the community. Through his balanced pen and lifelong service, Brown has uplifted voices, preserved history, and inspired generations
  • Food trucks and vendors โ€“ Local flavors and goods highlighting community entrepreneurship

And much more, from live music and arts to activities designed for all ages.

A festival with purpose

At its heart, Southside Back In The Day is about building strong, connected neighborhoods. Its guiding values are simple yet powerful: โ€œLove Our Community and Each Other, Respect our Elders and Reach our Youth.โ€

โ€œEach One, Teach Oneโ€ is more than a motto. It is a call to action reminding every person that they have a role in shaping a safe, strong, and healthy community. By providing accessible and inclusive programming, SSBITD ensures that everyone, from children to elders, can participate in and benefit from the day.
